On Dec. 10, 2024, the community of Adams, Minn., came together to support Andrew and Tonya Schmitz in a big way. The family was facing immense hardship after the couple’s newborn daughter Mikayla was born prematurely at just over 25 weeks. The challenges that the Schmitz family faced were daunting — extended NICU stays, mounting healthcare costs, and the emotional toll of caring for a premature baby.
During this stressful time, a heartwarming display of generosity and unity unfolded, orchestrated by Member Advisor Travis Schmitz who helped rally the community.
Catholic United Financial has long been committed to serving our Members when they experience hardships of all kinds. Through the Member Assistance Grant program, Catholic United Financial provides a matching grant to communities, matching up to $1,000 raised at local fundraising events in support of a Member. Travis Schmitz knew this grant could make a big difference for his cousin’s family in their time of need.
“Our mission as Catholics and as Christians calls us to serve others in their time of need,” Travis said. “This grant aligns perfectly with that mission. It’s not just about financial assistance; it’s about being there for our neighbors and showing what can be achieved when we come together.”
On the evening of Dec. 10, the local American Legion Hall in Adams transformed into a center of support for the Schmitz family. Over 250 people showed up for the spaghetti supper and silent auction fundraiser, creating a line that was wrapped around the building. The turnout was so overwhelming that additional tables and chairs had to be set up. By the end of the night, the community had raised an incredible $19,000.
“The amount of people and the amount of money raised was a miracle,” Travis said. “Every Council Member and volunteer played a vital role.”
The funds raised, plus the matching grant, provided a financial cushion for the Schmitz family. While some of the money went toward healthcare costs, it also helped the family stay afloat during a period when their focus was entirely on Mikayla’s well-being.
The fundraiser for the Schmitz family is more than just a story of financial assistance; it’s a testament to the strength of community and the values that Catholic United Financial upholds. Programs like the Member Assistance Matching Grant empower communities to support their members, showcasing the extraordinary outcomes that can arise from coming together with compassion.
